Painter Šarūnas Leonavičius is a famous book graphic artist, the author of illustrations Lietuvių religija ir mitologija (Lithuanian Religion and Mythology) (2008) by Gintaras Beresnevičius, Biblija: Senasis Testamentas (Bible – Old Testament) (2007) by Samuel Boguslav Khylinsky, Jūratė ir Kastytis (Jūratė and Kastytis) (2012) by Maironis. Original images created to literary texts are always a pleasure to the eye in each new project of the painter: the artist not only employs a number of different graphical techniques, but also uses oil or tempera painting techniques.
Illustrations for the Kristijonas Donelaitis’ poem Metai comprise 20 compositions: 12 large pictorial painting compositions for each part of the poem – Pavasario linksmybės (Spring Joys), Vasaros darbai (Summer Toil), Rudenio gėrybės (Autumn Boons), and Žiemos rūpesčiai (Winter Cares) (76 x 122 cm; 76 x 63 cm, 53 x 38 cm) , and 8 black-and-white paintings. The painter invoked the multilayered-nature of Donelaitis’ poem which allowed for original interpretations. At the same time, the painter paid great attention to the authentic details and spirit of Donelaitis’ times.
The book Metai by Kristijonas Donelaitis is published by Publishing House of Artists’ Union artseria with support from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. Printed by BALTOprint. The book will be also launched at the Book Fair.
