On 8-12 July, the first regional international contemporary art fair ARTVILNIUS’09 will take place within the framework of the program “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009”. Amateur artists, art experts and collectors will have an exclusive opportunity to familiarize with geographically and stylistically broad panorama of modern art.

In Vilnius, at the halls of LITEXPO, the area of which makes 11 632 square kilometres, the visitors will see the exhibits of the 101 art galleries from 31 countries. Galleries from all European countries, Asia, North and South America will take part. 74 foreign galleries and 26 Lithuanian galleries will introduce their national art.

The neighbouring Riga and Germany are particularly abundantly represented: 10 galleries each. Not only guests from such neighbouring cities as Minsk, Warsaw, Tallinn, Berlin, Linz, Viborg participate in the event, but also guests from such distant countries as Buenos Aires, Quebec, Calcutta and Almaty. The exhibits of the galleries will be complemented by a special project, namely an exhibition of the newest Lithuanian sculptures and installations.

Such well-known galleries as Walter Bischoff (Berlin), Schuster (Berlin, Frankfurt am Main), XL (Moscow), ArtStrelka (Moscow), Varfok (Budapest) and many other most famous galleries participating in international fairs alongside with different young galleries that established themselves in their national art market will be exhibited in Vilnius. The Portuguese galleries in cooperation with their national embassy prepared a special exhibit for Vilnius art fair. Comprehensive presentation of art scenes of Kiev (even 5 galleries), Budapest (even 4 galleries) and Saint Petersburg and Moscow will be a surprise to the visitors. The visitors will see the works of arts of such world-famous artists as Hans Hartung, Georg Baselitz, Arman, Carsten Hoeller, Olafur Eliasson, Franz West, Oleg Kulik, Imre Bukta. Although the art works of painting will prevail in the exhibit, art works of sculpture, objects art works of graphics, photography and video will be exhibited. In total, more than 300 pieces of work of foreign authors and 100 pieces of work of the Lithuanian authors can be seen in the exhibition. The visitors will be familiarized with international art from the 1960’s to the newest tendencies. The works of art of the classic artists of contemporary abstract and figurative art will be exhibited in the gallery Walter Bischoff, whereas the works of art of the artists of new realism painting and printmaking will be exhibited in such galleries as Schuster, Maerz, Emmanuel Post, Varfok, Next Art, Elizabeth Couturier, Maksla XO ir Brunnhofer. The works of art of traditional media artists of post-conceptualism and new mixed media art works will be exhibited in the galleries XL, ARTStrelka, D137, Serpente, Ideas Emergentes, Jarsbo, VKN, Riga, Podzemka, Fofa, Candyland, Appetite.

The following additional events will be held during the fair: catwalk discussion on the possibilities of galleries for integration into the global art market and tours around the exhibits for the visitors of the exhibition. Furthermore, publishers of books, magazines of art and photography and art institutions will exhibit their information stands in the fair.

A great number of the participants of the fair constitutes a perfect opportunity for the visitors to go on a cognitive tour around worldwide art galleries in Vilnius, whereas for the gallerists, artists, collectors and heads of institutions themselves it is a possibility to establish international contacts. As for the Lithuanian galleries from the largest cities and smaller cities, artists and collectors, it opens the door to the global art market.
