Domas Mykolas was born in Kaunas and graduated from Kaunas Art Gymnasium. He later studied sculpture at the Kaunas Faculty of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. After two years, he transferred to the Vilnius Faculty, where he completed his bachelor’s degree. He later studied heritage conservation at Vilnius University, before obtaining his master’s degree from the Department of Sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Moving between different faculties and universities provided the artist with a range of new experiences and encouraged his interest in history and archaeology. This interest, in turn, led him towards themes of nostalgia and a fascination with the experiences of the 1990s generation.

His creative point of departure is a sweet, personal nostalgia for the games, animation and its characters, as well as the familiar brands and products that shaped the generation growing up in the 1990s. His work contains numerous references to the distinctive aesthetics of 1990s virtual reality, which at the time seemed to offer an idealised, peaceful world of childhood, continuously inviting one to return and immerse oneself in it. This virtual world taught young people to distinguish good from evil, introduced them to different cultures and natural phenomena, and fostered ideas of equality and anti-racism.

In each exhibition, the artist creates seemingly separate worlds that nevertheless invite connections between them. He does not shy away from irony directed at himself and others, while employing a variety of materials to explore the themes of his work. Sculptural objects predominate in his practice.
